Tamarillo or the tree tomato as it was known prior to 1967 is a wonderful source of vitamin C and other nutrients. I can honestly say I have never tried them and I haven’t really ever been tempted to, but I noticed the local market had them on special so decided it was now or never. Time to make Tamarillo Jam.
To make the jam you need to blanch the fruit so that the skins can be removed easily and then the fruit is chopped and boiled with a little added apple and water until they are nice and pulpy. Then it is boiled again with sugar and lemon juice added.
The resulting jam is a beautiful colour and looks really pretty in the jar. The best thing though is that it tastes really yummy. Its hard to describe the favour but its so nice. It would definitely be something to try in the future if you want to give something different ago. The lovely looking jars would make fantastic gifts as well. 🙂
Another recipe I tested was the beetroot chutney. Beetroot is quite inexpensive at the moment so it is the best time to give it a go.
Before you begin this recipe its very important to have some gloves. The beetroot will stain your hands and is not the easiest thing to get off so definitely do yourself a favour and use gloves.
The recipe is very straight forward and take around an hour and a quarter from start to finish.
Now personally I don’t actually like beetroot that much. I will eat it if I have to but it really isn’t one of my favourite things in the world. Because of this, I didn’t have much hope when it came to tasting the chutney. However, I am so surprised by this chutney. The flavour is delicious. Its not overpoweringly earthy which is one of the things that I dont like about beetroot. The chutney does have a very savoury flavour which will go brilliantly with cold meats and cheeses.
There is a slight warmth from the ginger in the recipe which gives it an interesting and pleasing finish.
I am definitely a huge fan of this chutney recipe. I imagine the flavours will develop more over time but it will only get better. Even if you aren’t really a beetroot fan I would recommend you give the Edmonds recipe a try. You may be as surprised by it as I was.
