This Easter I decided to have an afternoon tea for family on the Sunday. So it was a good opportunity to crack some of the recipes in the party finger food section.
I started with the cheese ball recipe. (Page 197).
I hadn’t made this recipe before because it had a few things that I didn’t readily have in my pantry – gherkins and pickled onions. My family usually eat the sweet little white cocktail onions. I finally decided to give the recipe a go because most people I know do seem to enjoy it.
The recipe is very simple to assemble and the resulting flavour was lovely. Even if you aren’t a fan of gherkins or pickled onions the flavour of them doesn’t leap out at you so I think you would still enjoy it.
The recipe does make quite a large ball so it’s perfect for when you have a good number of guests over. I would definitely make this recipe again although I may add just a little tomato to it next time for a little pop of freshness. Overall I would recommend this recipe.
The second recipe I tried was the cheese biscuit recipe on page 198. Once again the recipe was simple to put together and the ingredients were ones that most of us would have already in our cupboards. It was also very quick to make.
The resulting biscuits were really popular with everyone. They are light and crisp and have a lovely subtle cheese flavour. The only change I would make is the size they recommend making them. I found on cooking the 4cm by 4cm squares shrunk a little and this meant they were quite small. Next time I would make them a little bigger.
This recipe is going to be used over and over again because it was quick, easy and delicious.
The final recipe I tackled was on page 199 – Mousetraps. Most people I know have their own way of doing mousetraps and I know in my family everyone is fussy when it comes to them.
The Edmonds recipe on reading doesn’t sound great and the other thing that stands out is the lack of quantities. If you are someone who isn’t much of a cook the recipe is not helpful in any way. I made them the way that seemed to make the most sense and the resulting mousetraps were average and unremarkable. I think even tweaking the quantities wouldn’t have really helped to be honest.
Life is too short for bad mousetraps so here is a version I use. Everyone I make them for loves them. The recipe can be tweaked to match your personal taste but I promise they are better than the Edmonds version *blurch* I know I know it’s a taste thing but they really weren’t good.
So those were the recipes I added to afternoon tea on Sunday. I also quickly threw together some pikelets. I decided that having more savoury than sweet things was probably the way to go as most people would have already been visited by the Easter bunny and had lots of sweet things already.
