Introducing Sometimes Food Snob

My name is Taniamaree. Taniamaree!I have been cooking since the age of ten. I grew up in a single parent household with 2 brothers and a father that worked at the local hydroelectric power station on shifts that were all times of the day and night. Basically if I didn’t cook, no one ate. My father however was an amazing cook and I learnt a lot of my early cooking skills from him.

Ever since I can remember there has been an Edmonds cookbook floating around the home. Edmonds has been the go-to book for many kiwis and is so popular it is even sold in local supermarkets. The Edmonds has been published since 1879 and like many kiwis I have many different versions of the book.

There are recipes in the Edmonds that bring back many wonderful memories and have become firm family favourites but I must admit not all recipes I have tried from the Edmonds have been successful.

I am not a Michelin star chef but I am an above average home cook. I have done catering in the past and had a successful job in that area. Talking to a lot of people in my life they also are of the opinion that the Edmonds has some great recipes but they too find some just don’t seem to work.

So that brings me to my project for 2016. I am going to work my way through all 496 recipes from the Edmonds Cookery Book 67th edition executing them exactly as written and work out which ones work and which ones don’t seem to be playing the game. I will be working from my home kitchen with every day equipment, after all the Edmonds is designed for every day cooks not professionals. If a recipe honestly doesn’t seem to work I am going to come up with a version of the recipe that does work for you guys. It’s also going to force me to try some of the recipes I may have avoided over the years. I am going to work seasonally so I am not going to be making creamy hot soups in the middle of a heatwave. Its currently summer in New Zealand so what a perfect time to start this journey. I hope you will join me on what could be an awesome culinary adventure or what could be the quickest way to drive myself and my family crazy. Wish me luck 🙂

A Cake To Help You See In The Dark

One of my favourite cakes in the entire world is carrot cake. I don’t eat it very often though because it’s so hard to find a good moist cake when out and about. I was equal parts excited and reluctant to try the recipe on page 48 because I am so fussy when it comes …
